Does long URL's affect search capabilities
How does long URL's affect search capabilities? Does it pose any other threats or cause data corruption in databases etc? I need to know because it ties in with the folders vs Doc Library dilemma, the more folders one creates the longer the url becomes. But with Doc Libraries it kinda doesn't cause that much of a problem.
 
Please advise....

If your design around taxonomy and Information Architecture is thought out well and you place focus on "tagging" items in a list/library with sound metadata - essentially your search will work well.
 
I dont suggest use of folders within libraries. Use metadata and grouping, provided you dont have massive lists and special security requirement.
 
I've never seen a SharePoint URL length become a problem but again simply avoid the Folder and you're over coming a possible obsticle.
 
I dont think Doc Lib should ever vs a Folder. Folders reside in libraries so plan carefully around your data entities for libraries. If you find you designing too many folders you're still stuck on the traditional File Server Share thinking.
